Whether it be in the form of a local sponsorship, helping in the community or donating to a good cause, at TotalEnergies New Zealand we care about people and communities across New Zealand.
One of our businesses four strategic pillars is “Invest in Sustainable Solutions”.
We are focused on:
An example of our commitment to sustainability is our self-funded packaging recycling programme. We recycle all our 20 litre pails and drum packaging. Customers are offered free removal of 20 litre containers nationally and these are taken to a recycling facility, chipped, and exported to manufacture other products or used locally to produce products. This is done at TotalEnergies NZ’s cost.
Drums are collected from customers and returned to one of our 11 sites and then collected by a drum recycling company or delivered to a metal recycling centre. Reports are generated monthly to measure how we are tracking with our packaging recycling. 40% of our 20L packaging is recycled through this channel each year.
As a company, we collaborate with our partner TotalEnergies to continuously improve and innovate. Intensive research and testing has led to a number of more sustainable oil solutions, with far greater biodegradable properties as their predecessors. TotalEnergies New Zealand embraces and implements these more sustainable, high-quality lubricants where applicable.
At TotalEnergies New Zealand, we prefer sending invoices electronically. This switch has meant benefits for all – more efficiency and speed for customers, less paper use for the environment. We also recycle all our office waste, reducing our regular waste by about 2/3 each week.
Whether it be in the form of a local sponsorship, helping in the community or donating to a good cause, at TotalEnergies New Zealand we care about people and communities across New Zealand.
Our preferred waste oil partner is Glide (WPC). They plan to be in the South Island in January 2026. Glide is currently building a plant to turn waste oil into RRBO (re-refined base oil). This base oil will then be exported for use in RRBO oil products. Glide projects to save over 100,000 tonnes of CO2 annually (the equivalent of taking 40,000 vehicles off our roads). Carbon savings will be independently verified by Toitū Environmental.
Re-refined oil is an advanced process that cleans and restores waste oil to its original state, making it suitable for use as new lubricating oil. In contrast, recycled oil is filtered through a simple process, making it suitable for use as burner fuel. Many current waste oil practices across New Zealand involve oil being ‘recycled’ and then burnt as fuel which releases toxic pollutants and carbon emissions into our atmosphere.
As part of our equipment review, we will audit any waste oil tanks on sites and will recommend replacement if required.
